Cottage Rentals – How to Choose June 20/14

Many residents in the Almaguin Highlands had their introduction to the area by renting a cottage for a summer getaway.  After their experience here they decided that Almaguin Highlands had their hearts and they relocated to live the dream.   With today’s technology Back of Cottage2people can get a view of pictures, inside and out, reviews from previous renters and some even have videos to show the features to make sure the cottage you have chosen is what you expected.  Along with the ease of choosing, scheduling and paying for your stay comes a false sense of security that your expectations will be met.  It is not that the cottage owners mislead the consumer, it usually is because the customer did not ask some very crucial questions before deciding that the cottage was a good choice.

1)  Ask about rules and regulations that the cottage renter must abide by.  For example are campfires allowed, are guests allowed to stay for the day to use the facilities?(family shows up unexpected)

2) Ask what comes with the cottage rental.  Is there a boat provided ( boat license is required) and is it an extra cost? If you bring your boat where do you launch it?

3) Ask about boating restrictions.  Many smaller lakes are restricted to the size of engines on the boats and some only canoes and paddle boats.  It would be a shame to bring your boat or personal water craft and not be able to use it.

4) Ask about the waterfront terrain.  Is steep to the water’s edge, is there a sand beach, rock or boulder shoreline, a dock and how deep in the entry to the water?  Do you have a water view from the cottage or is it so far back you can not see the lake?   All these are important questions especially if you have children or people unsteady when walking.

5)Ask if there is heat in the cottage, local sites there are to visit or an area for indoor activities.  Nothing can dampen enjoyment or give you cabin fever,Games Room more than if your holiday lands on a cool rainy week.  A cozy fireplace to take the chill out of the air in the cottage will make staying indoors a relaxing experience.

Choosing a cottage for the activities, amenities required and physical setting you need are so important to really enjoy your experience.  Who knows you may also be one of those people how falls in love with the area and decide to get a cottage of their own.  Here is a site to visit with cottages available for your introduction to the Beautiful Almaguin Highlands

About Louisa Moffit

I have been a REALTOR® for the past 21 years and love the area and communities I work in. When showing property or taking listings I always travel with my four legged companions. My clients and I enjoy their company when walking through the forest viewing pristine vacant property which they are interested in purchasing. My dog’s antics through the snow is also a source of amusement to everyone. Getting serious however… viewing properties throughout the area can be a daunting task without the expertise of a real estate agent who knows the area well. That is why I am your “Go To” REALTOR® for Undiscovered Cottage Country – The Almaguin Highlands
